What is an Elevated Dog Bowl?

An elevated dog bowl can also be referred to as an elevated or raised feeder. It's essentially a stand that holds dog bowls so that the dog eating from it doesn't have to stoop low to reach the bowls. Most hold two bowls in the same stand, one for food and one for water, but a handful can only accommodate a single bowl.

Elevated bowls put less strain on the neck and certain other joints while eating, which is especially beneficial for older and arthritic dogs.

At one point, elevated bowls were touted by experts as a way to reduce the risk of Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV), which is more commonly known as bloat. However, more recent studies suggest a correlation between raised feeders and incidence of bloat. This doesn't necessarily prove that raised feeders cause bloat, but if your dog is of a breed prone to bloat, you may want to think twice about using elevated dog bowls.

Food bowls should be washed with dish soap and hot water (alternatively in the dishwasher if dishwasher safe) after every meal. Water bowls can be cleaned less often. We'd recommend rinsing them out daily, and washing by hand or in the dishwasher once a week.
